Godly families are borne out of loving our Lord Jesus Christ together.
4 “Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. 5 You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. 6 And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. 7 You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise. 8 You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. 9 You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.” (Deuteronomy 6:4-9)
“I pledge and commit to strengthen my family bonds by:
listening to one another;
making time for one another;
showing love, care and concern for one another respecting one another, especially when resolving our differences;
appreciating and affirming our family members; supporting one another through good and bad times.”
In the past two weeks we have looked at the importance of understanding God’s design for marriage and family and today we see from Deuteronomy 6 that the family is the unit whereby the statutes and rules of God are taught and passed on from one generation to the next. Fathers in particular have a significant role as the spiritual head of household, they are to know the Word of God and be able to impart it to their children. Fathers and mothers model for their children what it means to be men and women of faith, committed disciples of Christ. It is therefore of utmost importance that familial bonds be strong and relationships healthy so that communication among family members is open and loving. Godly families are borne out of loving our Lord Jesus Christ together. Godly families become a beacon of hope for those struggling with family troubles by pointing to the answer found in God’s mandate. “24 And the Lord commanded us to do all these statutes, to fear the Lord our God, for our good always, …. 25 And it will be righteousness for us, if we are careful to do all this commandment before the Lord our God, as he has commanded us.’”
Family matter. Family units form the bedrock of society. The stronger and healthier each family is, the better for society as a whole. We thank God that there is an emphasis on Family this year as the government has designated thus: 2022 Year of Celebrating Families – launched in March and coming up from 5-12 June, a National Family Week. It was also heartening to know that on 26 April, The Alliance for Action to Strengthen Marriages and Family Relationships launched its SG Family Pledge. This is a pledge that should resonate with all of us who treasure our families and work at improving our relationships with loved ones.
