New Season

Romans 12:10-13

January 13, 2025

As with every new season, changes or “new” things are to be expected.

As we enter 2025, there is a strong sense that God is leading our church into a new season. As with every new season, changes or “new” things are to be expected. These new things may have been in the works for awhile, or they may come to us without warning. Whichever the case, it is our collective trust in God and reliance on the leading of the Spirit that will get us through this new season stronger and more united than before.

Be devoted to one another in love. Honour one another above yourselves… (Rom12:10-13)

As your new PIC, I want to give us some encouragement from Scripture as we step into this new season of much change and challenge. The Letter to the Hebrews tells us, Endure hardship as discipline; God is treating you as his children. For what children are not disciplined by their father? If you are not disciplined – and everyone undergoes discipline – then you are not legitimate, not true sons and daughters at all… but God disciplines us for our good, in order that we may share in his holiness. No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it. Hebrews 12:7-8,10b-11
For some of us, the season ahead may bring much hardship. Perhaps your job is on the line, or perhaps your relationships with loved ones and brothers and sisters-in-Christ may be tested, or yet, maybe some other difficult thing may be awaiting you. My charge to you is to consider Jesus who endured the hardest of sufferings, and turn your gaze toward God that He may use this difficult situation to shape you as a Father grows His children. And through it, may you gain a harvest of righteousness and peace, as He has promised.
For yet others, this season may not be quite so dramatic. May I invite you to seek to walk closely with our brothers and sisters-in-Christ, offering real help and true spiritual friendship during times of need? As Scripture says, “Be devoted to one another in love. Honour one another above yourselves. Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervour, serving the Lord. Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer. Share with the Lord’s people who are in need. Practise hospitality.” (Romans 12:10-13)
