BURNING HEARTS ON THE EMMAUS ROAD

LUKE 24:13-35 (ESV)

April 21, 2026

‘Lord, set my heart on fire again.’

My concern for myself and every one of you is that after believing in the truth we begin to feel cold inside. The feeling is like this: You know Jesus is alive- but your heart feels distant. You’re walking- but not burning.
That was what happened to the disciples on the Road to Emmaus. They had the facts – but not the fire. Until Jesus drew near.

They said to each other, “Did not our hearts burn within us while he talked to us on the road, while he opened to us the Scriptures?” (Lk 24:32)

And what did He do? He opened the Holy Scriptures. Beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, He revealed Himself. Because the Bible is not just about principles – it reveals a Person.
Notice this: their hearts didn’t burn first – their minds were opened first. Jesus helped them understand before they began to feel. Often times, we wait for feelings before we seek understanding- but God often works the other way around (Romans 12:1-2).
Then, when their eyes were opened, they responded immediately. ‘That same hour,’ they got up and returned. No delay. No hesitation. No doubt. When God moves, we move. But fire must be fed. Like a campfire, if left unattended, it fades- even after burning brightly. Spiritual passion requires continual stoking.
So how do we burn again? Focus on Christ. Invest in His Word. Respond to conviction. Stay committed to the conviction. And spur others on.

Brothers and sisters in Christ, don’t settle for a lukewarm walk with the living Christ. Make this your prayer this week: ‘Lord, set my heart on fire again.’ And stay in His Word long enough- until it moves you. Because when Jesus draws near, cold hearts don’t stay cold. They “burn” with a fiery passion. God bless you.
