Wisdom

Proverbs 9:10

July 24, 2023

Indeed to find solutions that produce the best result is not easy.

The writer of Proverbs wrote that The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding (Proverbs 9:10).

Hebrew Parallelism is a common literary feature of the Old Testament poetry. In it words of two or more lines of the text are directly related in some ways. In the verse above “the fear of the Lord” is paralleled to “knowledge of the Holy One”. And the “beginning of wisdom” parallels “understanding”. These two parts of the sentence serve to reinforce each other synonymously.

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding (Proverbs 9:10)

It is commonly accepted that wisdom is a deep understanding of people, things, events or situations, which should result in the ability to choose or act in a way that consistently produces the optimum results. It is the ability to apply perceptions and knowledge effectively and efficiently to produce desirable results. Wisdom, then, is the ability to comprehend what is true or right resulting in exercising good judgement.

Indeed to find solutions that produce the best result is not easy. We have to consider overlapping demands and expectations. But our Scripture assures us that If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you (James 1:5).

Still, while we pray and ask God for wisdom, let us take heed of James’ other guidance – Who is wise and understanding among you? Let them show it by their good life, by deeds done in the humility that comes from wisdom (James 3:13).

As part of our discipleship let us practice the fear of God, wisdom and humility.
