The worship of God

Hebrews 13

May we be the channel of God’s blessings to all around us.

Dear KY family,

We live in a world today where morality and justice are at an all time low, and the trajectory of our society is such that the rich get richer and the poor get poorer. The system is rigged against those of a lower socioeconomic strata.

I wonder, as you heard the sermons preached at our KY Social Concerns Sunday last week, whether your heart has been stirred with the compassion of God for the least, the last and the lost. It is no secret that the vast majority of members of the Methodist Church in Singapore come from the middle-upper class of Singapore society. And so, we must ask ourselves: what are the blessings that we have received from God that should be channeled outwards?

Scripture tells us in Hebrews 13,
Therefore by Him let us continually offer the sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of our lips, giving thanks to His name. But do not forget to do good and to share, for with such sacrifices God is well pleased.

The writer of the Letter to the Hebrews writes about the worship of God, and links it to our works of mercy. The implication here is that true worship of God must include doing good and sharing with others. And reverse implication is also vital for us to note: that if we worship God with our lips, but do not love others through our actions, our worship is faulty at best.

May the Lord find among us at Kum Yan Methodist Church a people who worship Him truly, and who love others through our actions. May we be the channel of God’s blessings to all around us. And may we be the loving community, the lighthouse, and the home in the city for such a time as this!
