The Value of Biblical Righteousness

Matthew 6:33

Why should we pursue righteousness?

Greetings, brothers and sisters in Christ. Following last week’s ‘Pastor’s Heart’ on the first character trait, holiness, allow me to come to the second character trait, righteousness.
Righteousness in the Scriptures is a distinct attribute of God (Romans 3:5). In biblical discipleship, it speaks of one’s integrity, virtue, purity of life, rightness, correctness of thinking, feeling, and acting and therefore being in right standing with God, that is, living according to His will and character. It’s not just about outward behaviour, but about an inward transformation that aligns our hearts with God’s.
A key verse about righteousness is found in Matthew 6:33 (ESV), “But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.”

“But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.” (Mt 6:33)

Why is righteousness such a precious commodity? Because righteousness…
• Restores our relationship with God. Sin separates us from God, but righteousness draws us near.
• Reflects Christ’s character. We are to be Christ-like; righteousness is His nature.
• Guides our decisions. It helps us discern right from wrong in a confusing world.
• Brings peace and confidence. “And the effect of righteousness will be peace, and the result of righteousness, quiet and trust (confidence) forever” (Isaiah 32:17).

Why should we pursue righteousness? Well…
1. It’s commanded. God calls His people to be holy and live righteously (1 Peter 1:16).
2. It’s a sign of living, not dead faith (James 2:17). Righteous living evidences a transformed heart and a fruitful life.
3. It influences others. Our righteous living is a testimony to the world (Matthew 5:16).
4. It is the gateway to eternal life (Matthew 25:46).

How can biblical righteousness be lived out on a daily basis?
1. Abide in Christ daily. Stay connected to Jesus through prayer, worship, and engaging the Word (John 15:4-5).
2. Obey God’s Word. Righteousness grows through obedience (Psalm 119:9, 11).
3. Repent quickly. When we sin, confess and turn back to God (1 John 1:9).
4. Walk in the Spirit. Let the Holy Spirit guide your thoughts and actions (Galatians 5:16-25).
5. Pursue justice and mercy. Live out righteousness in how you treat others (Micah 6:8, Matthew 23:23).

Brothers and sisters in Christ, righteousness is not about perfection, it is about direction, that of having a daily walk toward becoming more like Jesus (1 Corinthians 1:30). It’s the foundation of a fruitful, God-honouring life and a powerful witness to the (unrighteous) world. Every disciple of Jesus Christ ought to actively pursue righteousness through the grace and power of God. Will you? Shalom.
