Isaiah 6:3

Why do we need to pursue holiness?
I am very excited and encouraged to see Kum Yanites, both young and old, desiring to please God in every way – in self-transformation, outreach, evangelism and missions. While having my quiet time on May 13th, the Holy Spirit reminded me of the vital importance of focusing on the anchors of the faith as we endeavor to fulfill His purposes. This month, I shall take us through four of these anchors, beginning with biblical holiness.
Occurring 584 times in the Bible, the word holy or holiness means “set apart,” pure, and completely separate from sin. God’s holiness refers to his moral perfection and absolute uniqueness. He is holy in all His ways — in justice, love, truth, and power. God’s holiness is founded in verses such as Isaiah 6:3, “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord Almighty; the whole earth is full of his glory”, and 1 Peter 1:16, “… I am holy.”
“Holy, holy, holy is the Lord Almighty; the whole earth is full of his glory” (Isa 6:3)
From these biblical foundations on holiness:
i) God is totally pure and perfect
ii) There is no sin, error, or evil in him
iii) His holiness defines and shapes all His other attributes.
Now then, why do we need to pursue holiness? Because,
1. We are called to be like God
“Be holy in all you do” (1 Peter 1:15).
As God’s children, we are to reflect His character (1 Peter 1:14-16).
2. Holiness is a mark of true salvation
“Without holiness no one will see the Lord” (Hebrews 12:14b).
3. It honours God and glorifies Him
Holy living shines as a light in a dark world (Matthew 5:16).
4. It protects our relationship with God
Sin disrupts fellowship; holiness draws us closer to Him (Genesis 3).
How can we practise holiness?
1. Be separate from sin
Avoid things that defile your heart, mind, and body (2 Corinthians 6:17).
2. Fill your life with God’s Word
The Word sanctifies us (John 17:17). Let it shape your thinking, speech, and actions.
3. Pray for a clean heart
Ask God to purify your heart and renew your spirit daily (Psalm 51:10).
4. Rely on the Holy Spirit
Holiness is achieved only through the leading of the Spirit (Galatians 5:16-18).
5. Be intentional in your choices
Pursue godly habits, friendships, and thoughts (Philippians 4:8).
To conclude, God’s holiness is not just something to admire, it’s something to aspire to. It is not a task but is a lifestyle. To be holy is to live a life that is set apart for God, marked by purity, love, and obedience. How can you practise holiness in your daily living?
