1 John 2:6
Another spiritual discipline that I would like to mention is stillness, silence and solitude.
“whoever says he abides in him ought to walk in the same way in which he walked.” (1 John 2:6 ESV).
Following from last week’s introduction on Spiritual Formation, I would now unpack two of the five aspects this Sunday.
“whoever says he abides in him ought to walk in the same way in which he walked.” (1 John 2:6 ESV).
1. Growth: The purpose of God is to form in us the likeness of His Son, Jesus Christ. To achieve this you need the practice of the spiritual disciplines. I believe that there are those of us who are committed to LoveSingapore’s 40-Day Prayer and Fast. God bless you! Prayer is an amazing spiritual discipline that can turn Singapore Godward and make one Christ-like!For Jesus prayed regularly.
Another spiritual discipline that I would like to mention is stillness, silence and solitude. Without a doubt, the community is vital in causing us to grow. But there are times when we intentionally leave the community of family and friends to deepen our relationship with God. Stillness is when I slow down before God, silence is when I listen to God and solitude is when I take the opportunity to connect with God. Twice a year I would make a trip up to West Malaysia or Sarawak and spend 4 days or more with God. It is my precious ‘Father-son’ time. Armed with my electronic notebook, a paper notebook and a pencil, I would wait on the Lord to download His Word and direction for my life and ministry*.
It was during these moments of stillness, silence and solitude that I receive most from the Lord.
2. Process: Spiritual formation is a process that does not happen by chance. It is intentional in that one is required to plan for it and make time for it. This intentionality is rooted in a hunger to grow spiritually. And what do we do intentionally? Do the basics of the Christian life. Basics such as Bible study, daily devotion, fasting, prayer, journaling, worship, fellowship, celebration, contemplation, confession, simplicity, service, and stillness, solitude and silence.
Which of the spiritual disciplines are you compelled to focus more this season?
