Acts 1:23-26
This is because God’s plan is always the best for us.
The 13th Session of the General Conference of the Methodist Church in Singapore will take place from the 2nd to 6th September at the premise of Faith Methodist Church (Queenstown Chinese Methodist Church). During this once every quadrennial session, reports will be presented, and delegates review and reflect on all the different ministries of the church these past 4 years. They also make plans for the coming years. An important agenda during the Conference Session this year is the election of the Bishop, the head of the Methodist Church in Singapore, and the heads of all different Boards and committees.
Our Father in heaven, help us trust in you when there is an important decision to be made. May we have faith that you will guide and provide for us whichever path we choose. Amen.
Do note that election in a church setting is quite different from, say, the election of the Chairman of a Country Club. In the latter, candidates campaign and try to convince voters that they are the best person for the job. And they do that by highlighting their past achievements and track records.
But in a church election there are no campaigning between eligible candidates. Instead, the responsibility rest with the church and the delegates to sincerely pray and seek the Lord’s will on whom God has chosen to lead. It is a sacred exercise of seeking the will of God.
Matthias being chosen to replace Judas is a good example on chosen someone for church leadership:
So they nominated two men: Joseph called Barsabbas (also known as Justus) and Matthias. Then they prayed, “Lord, you know everyone’s heart. Show us which of these two you have chosen to take over this apostolic ministry, which Judas left to go where he belongs.” Then they cast lots, and the lot fell to Matthias; so he was added to the eleven apostles. (Acts 1:23-26)
Both Joseph and Matthias did not campaign to be chosen. But the disciples prayed and sought the Lord sincerely before making their decision. They must be well aware that the Lord Jesus Himself took time to pray before calling the 12.
Therefore, I urge you to pray for this coming General Conference session. Pray for the delegates to discern God’s will clearly on whom to elect to the various offices. This is because God’s plan is always the best for us.
Prayer: Our Father in heaven, help us trust in you when there is an important decision to be made. May we have faith that you will guide and provide for us whichever path we choose. Amen.
