Seek first his kingdom and his righteousness

Matthew 6:33

Jesus was teaching His disciples about priorities

“But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.” (Matthew 6:33)
This is a verse many of us know well — one of the great promises Jesus gave to His disciples. When we put God’s concerns above our own, He, in turn, cares for the things that matter to us.

“But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.” (Matt 6:33)

God’s Kingdom represents His rule and sovereignty. In the Lord’s Prayer, Jesus taught us to pray, “Your kingdom come.” In everything we do — whether in ministry or in daily life — we are to let Jesus reign and allow His authority to be shown through us. To seek His righteousness means to obey His commands and to walk in the ways He has called us to.
Here, Jesus was teaching His disciples about priorities — how to order the concerns of earthly life and spiritual life. Scripture clearly instructs us to seek first God’s Kingdom, His will, and the things that matter to Him: His commands, His truth, His ways. When we do this, God will provide all that we need. Seeking first is not just about praying; it is about actively pursuing and living out God’s truth in our lives.
To “seek first His kingdom and His righteousness” means that the Church must gather God’s people to worship Him humbly and to live in obedience to His Word. It means living a life that reflects the character of Christ — one that pleases and glorifies God. When God’s rule is evident in the Church, His righteousness, peace, joy, and the leading of the Holy Spirit will abound. We will learn to act justly, love mercy, and walk humbly with our God — living lives that are Spirit-led, harmonious, and filled with joy.
Each of us is a vessel in God’s hands. As we faithfully do what Jesus has commanded, God will also be faithful to fulfil His purposes — often in ways far beyond our own ability. Therefore, before making any decision, let us first seek God’s Kingdom and His righteousness. If we rely only on our own will, experience, understanding, preferences, pride, or ignorance, our efforts will ultimately be in vain.
When Jesus said, “and all these things will be given to you as well”, He was giving us a precious promise. Those who seek God’s Kingdom and righteousness above all else will receive blessings beyond what they could ever ask or imagine. These blessings are not earned through wisdom, effort, or achievement — they are the gracious provision of God. When we obey His will and become His willing vessels, His power will be released in and through us.
Serving God does not begin when we feel ready or capable — it begins with obedience. As we step out in faith, God’s strength and abundance will follow. That is the journey of faith. When we live each day in obedience to His will, God will faithfully provide all that we need.
In today’s world, many rely on their own ability, wisdom, and endless planning to build ministries or manage life’s demands. Yet if we fail to spend quiet time in prayer — to seek God’s heart and sincerely put His Kingdom and righteousness first — we may miss out on the “all these things” that He longs to give us, often beyond our asking or imagining.
Let us pray together:
Lord Jesus, thank You for Your precious promise. May Your Holy Spirit guide us, remove our pride and ignorance, and turn our hearts and minds toward You. Help us to seek first Your Kingdom and Your righteousness, and to experience the abundance of grace You have promised. In Jesus’ victorious name we pray, Amen.
