John 6:63

When you look at KY, what kind of a church family do you see?
Dear KY family,
Last week was CAC Sunday where the CAC Pastors exchange pulpits for one Sunday. At the English service, we welcomed Rev Patrick Chen. At our Mandarin and Cantonese services, we had Rev Helen Hoe and Rev Chua Ooi Suah respectively. Then in the afternoon, YC met Ps Jason Lee. The theme that the CAC President Rev Lek Yong Teck wanted all the pastors to speak about was Methodist Church founder John Wesley’s understanding of scriptural holiness that naturally leads to social holiness and revival in the land. The key point to drive at is that our pursuit of holiness is not meant to be contained within the walls of our church buildings. True holiness, according to the Scriptures, must impact the people and communities around us.
The Spirit gives life; the flesh counts for nothing. The words I have spoken to you—they are full of the Spirit and life. (Jn 6:63)
In my observation, Singapore is due for another revival. We had one in the 1930s with the ministry of the late John Sung, and again in the 80s with the famous clock tower revival. At every wave of revival that came to Singapore, the Spirit of God brought conviction of sin, a hunger for the Word and the presence of God, and an urgent appeal to spread the Gospel to the ends of the earth. I believe that a strong undercurrent is already moving all Christians and churches in Singapore towards spiritual hunger for God and His Word, and to fervent anointed prayer for the nation. We are in the thick of the wave that is soon to arrive.
What, then, are we to do? Firstly, as the Scriptures tell us, we must pray. We need to pray individually and corporately. Each of our congregations have prayer times set apart for us to pray together. Our next KY combined prayer meeting is on 5 September. I invite you to come and pray together with brothers and sisters in one heart and with one voice. Let’s seek the Lord, hear from Him, and lift our voices and hearts in prayer for the things that He has on His heart for us and for our nation.
Secondly, we must hunger for the Word. Hunger and love for the Word is a key sign that revival is coming. If we are not longing for the Word, then we should ask God for a greater desire to know Him through the Scriptures that He has spoken to us. His Word is Spirit and it is life (John 6:63). Without the Word, our inner life is dormant. We must hunger for God’s Word, and nourish ourselves with the Word continually. This is how our hearts become wells of living water.
Thirdly, we must live out holy lives. The Scriptures tell us that the person who reads the Word and does not live it out is like a man who looks himself in the mirror then walks away forgetting what he looks like (James 1:23). Obedience to and the practice of God’s Word build us toward holy living for without holiness, no one will see the Lord (Hebrews 12:14).
Lastly, we must love each other deeply. Not a wishy washy kind of love, but a deep and holy love. A love that can forgive all manner of wrongdoing, but at the same time, will not accept anything less than full Lordship of Christ over each other’s lives. Imagine: A church of believers who truly love each other with a deep holy love, where each one will brave the embarrassment and risk the relationship in order to hold each other accountable for the way we live, and who will come to each other’s help when one falls and who will grant sufficient grace to map for each other a path to redemption and reconciliation within the community.
