Deuteronomy 6: 4-6
One of the hardest things to do is to pass on the faith to the younger generation.
It is such a joy to see whole family, both young and old, worshiping the Lord together on Sundays. Yet one of the hardest things to do is to pass on the faith to the younger generation. Indeed the great challenge we face is how to live out what it means to fear, love and trust God in a visible way so that our children catch these values for themselves. The key is to consistently model a life of faith and dependency on God before we expect our children to do so themselves.
Love the Lord with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. (Deut 6:5)
Deuteronomy 6: 4-6 reminds us to Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. Love the Lord with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. These commandments that I give you today are to be upon your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. Write them on the door frames of your house and on your gates.
The trust of these few verses is a call to use every opportunity available and to spare no efforts to instruct our children about God. It is a call to nurture their faith in God and to mentor them towards living their life in God. And if we do not mentor and model these today, we are likely to lose them tomorrow.
The mid-year June school holidays are upon us again. During this period many families spend time together and quite a few travel to other places for a break. Hence, let us seize these opportunities for discipleship and not let it slip by.
Here’s wishing all our fathers (grandfather’s included) an early Blessed Father’s Day!
