John 13:35

May we walk forward as one Kum Yan Family.
Greetings dear Family! Over the past weeks, we have been reflecting on what it means to be God’s Family. First, we were reminded that we are saved into God’s Family, called to love one another as Christ has loved us. Then, we considered how we are the Body of Christ, living Spirit-led, self-denying, and gift-sharing lives together under Christ our Head.
Today, let us take a further step. This Family that we belong to is intergenerational, interdependent, and international.
“By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” (Jn 13:35)
INTERGENERATIONAL
The Family of God is not made up of one age group, but of many generations walking together.
“One generation commends your works to another; they tell of your mighty acts. They speak of the glorious splendor of your majesty—and I will meditate on your wonderful works. They tell of the power of your awesome works—and I will proclaim your great deeds. They celebrate your abundant goodness and joyfully sing of your righteousness.” – Psalm 145:4–7
Our calling is that one generation will pass on the knowledge, testimony, and praise of God to the next. No generation stands alone. Each receives from God a unique piece of the puzzle, and we only see the fullness of what He is building when all generations place their pieces together.
“Even when I am old and gray, do not forsake me, my God, till I declare your power to the next generation, your mighty acts to all who are to come.” – Psalm 71:18
This means our Family must treasure the young and honor the old, walking side by side in faith, worship, and service.
INTERDEPENDENT
As the Body of Christ, our lives are bound together.
“If one part suffers, every part suffers with it; if one part is honored, every part rejoices with it.” – 1 Corinthians 12:26
We are not meant to succeed or struggle alone, but to share our joys and burdens with one another.
This inter-dependence also shapes how we discern God’s will. Scripture shows us that each of us sees and knows only in part, and therefore we need one another. In Acts 15, the early church discerned together what the Spirit was saying, concluding: “It seemed good to the Holy Spirit and to us…” (Acts 15:28). Corporate discernment means listening together — to God’s Word, His Spirit, and to one another.
And sometimes, as in 1 Samuel 13, God’s people had to learn not to move until He spoke clearly. Inter-dependence means waiting on God together, refusing to run ahead in our own wisdom.
This is a call to humility: to depend not only on God, but also on one another in the Family.
INTERNATIONAL
Finally, God’s Family is not only local, but global. Jesus is coming back for one Church, one Bride, made up of every tribe, tongue, and nation.
“I have given them the glory that you gave me, that they may be one as we are one.” – John 17:22
We are part of something much bigger than ourselves. Our Kum Yan Family is joined with the Methodist Church, with the wider Church in Singapore, and with believers all around the world. Together, we are called to cross cultural missions and outreach to the unreached, and also to Oneness with God’s people, so that the world may believe in Jesus.
LIVING AS GOD’S FAMILY
Dear Family, what a privilege it is to belong to such a household of faith — intergenerational, interdependent, and international! But this also calls us to action. Will we make space in our lives to learn from those both older and younger than us? Will we choose humility, discerning together what the Spirit is saying and bearing one another’s burdens so that quitting is never an option? Will we remember that we belong to a global Body, and pray and live with the nations in view?
“By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” – John 13:35
May we walk forward as one Kum Yan Family — across generations, in mutual dependence, and with believers worldwide — so that Christ is glorified and His Kingdom made visible on earth by how we live out our faith!
