Colossians 4: 5-6

November 6, 2023

Adele Fielde module of training people became a world-class model that inspired many evangelists.

This week let me share with you a story taken from Guardians of the Great Commission. This book is written by Ruth Tucker who served as a missionary to Indonesia. Later she was a lecturer in missions studies and writer of church history.

Walk in wisdom towards outsiders, making the best use of the time. Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how you ought to answer each person. (Colossians 4: 5-6)

Adele Fielde (1839-1916) was all set to marry her fiancé, a missionary in Thailand. When she landed in Thailand in 1865 after a long ocean voyage, she learned that her fiancé had died months earlier! Her dreams of becoming a wife and a mother were shattered. Though completely devastated, Adele determined to carry on her fiance’s work. She later served in China.
Among the many services that she was engaged in, her role in sending local women for evangelism stood out. In the 1870s, she founded a training school to train women on how to reach out to people in the villages. Through this method, she was able to raise an army of 500 Bible women in 25 years. Her module of training people became a world-class model that inspired many evangelists.
The evangelists that she trained may not rise to speak at the pulpit and might have looked very “ordinary”. But it has contributed to the growth of the church in Asia.
As we near the end of the year let us continue to seize every opportunity to do the work of missions and evangelism.
