Grateful for His Faithfulness, Hopeful for His Promises

Deuteronomy 11:11–12

December 30, 2024

As we enter this new year, let us hold fast to God’s promises.

Deuteronomy 11:11–12
But the land you are crossing the Jordan to take possession of is a land of mountains and valleys that drinks rain from heaven. It is a land the Lord your God cares for; the eyes of the Lord your God are continually on it from the beginning of the year to its end.

The year 2024 is coming to a close, and in just two days, it will be 2025! We thank the Lord for His constant presence, guiding us from the beginning of the year to its end. God is faithful, and He will continue to lead us on the journey ahead.

But the land you are crossing the Jordan to take possession of is a land of mountains and valleys that drinks rain from heaven. It is a land the Lord your God cares for; the eyes of the Lord your God are continually on it from the beginning of the year to its end. (Deut 11:11-12)

Moses led the Israelites out of slavery in Egypt, and after 40 years in the wilderness, they finally arrived at the Jordan River. Before them lay the Promised Land of Canaan—a land flowing with milk and honey—marking the beginning of a new chapter in their lives.
Today’s Scripture reveals God’s promises to His people as they prepared to step into this new season:

1. “A land of mountains and valleys that drinks rain from heaven”: Even if the path ahead is filled with mountains or valleys, challenges or losses, God’s grace and provision are like rain from heaven, refreshing and nourishing the earth. His grace is sufficient, and He remains the God who is always with His people, now and forever.
2. “The eyes of the Lord your God are continually on it from the beginning of the year to its end”: God promises to watch over His people wherever they are—whether in the heights of mountains, the depths of valleys, or the expanse of plains. From the start of the year to its end, God will be with them every day, faithfully leading and caring for them.

What a precious promise and blessing! As we step into the new year, God offers us this priceless reassurance: He is with us and will never leave us. However, to receive His promises, we must fulfil one condition: “You must go in and take possession of the land.” This means we must have the determination and desire to move forward, no matter what the circumstances. Trusting in God, looking to Him, and stepping into the land of His promises will enable us to experience His presence and blessings. With hearts full of gratitude, let us embrace the inheritance and provisions God has prepared for His people. He will protect, guide, and richly bless us.
As we enter this new year, let us hold fast to God’s promises. The Lord Jesus continues to lead the way. No matter what lies ahead, we need not fear—only believe. Cling to God’s promises, resolve to live a renewed and victorious life in the Lord. Seek Him daily in prayer, draw near to His presence, and He will provide all-sufficient grace. His eyes will watch over us each day, and His abundant provision and blessings will follow. The peace and joy that come from God will sustain us every step of the way.
Though the Israelites had never travelled the road to Canaan, God’s promises awaited them. Similarly, as we step into the new year, we may not know what lies ahead, but we can be assured of God’s wonderful promises. The Lord is faithful, and His promises never fail. If we trust and obey Him, listen to His voice, and cultivate a close relationship with Him, He will remain with us always. We will experience and witness His promises and blessings, living each day of the year under His care and favour.
