Cornerstone

Ephesians 2: 19-20

October 28, 2024

Get the cornerstone right, and the result is a sturdy dwelling.

Recently my friend wanted to do some renovation to his resale flat that he just bought. He sought my advice on which design and color tiles are best for his kitchen floor. Later I accompanied him to the hardware store to pick the tiles.
In the showroom there were many types of tiles of different material, designs and sizes. Beside tiles there were other things on sale too – sand, cement, pipes, bricks, paint, etc. These materials do not look like they will form a building when viewed on their own. But in the hands of skillful builders, these raw materials will come together to form a beautiful house.

“Built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the chief cornerstone.” (Eph 2:20)

Like building material we all have different gifts and talents. And these talents are put to good use on Sundays. Hence some of us lead worship, others play music, and still others are involved in visitation and hospitality. All these coming together form a beautiful picture of the church. And most importantly, Christ as the cornerstone.
In Ephesians 2: 19-20 Paul paints a picture of the church saying but fellow citizens with God’s household, build on the foundation of the apostles, and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the chief cornerstone.
We all know that for a house to be robust and long lasting it needs a firm foundation. But what about the cornerstone, what is the purpose? The cornerstone is the piece of stone in the foundation that serves as a reference from which all other measurements are made. Even the remaining foundations are marked off from this guide. Get the cornerstone right, and the result is a sturdy dwelling. Get it wrong, and the consequences could be disastrous.
Scripture says that each of us are the temple of God. Indeed as we continue to build God’s temple within us let us hold fast to Christ the cornerstone.
