1 Thessalonians 5:18
What spiritual discipline/s* is the Lord calling you to pay more attention to in 2026?
As 2025 draws to a close and the new horizon of 2026 beckons, it is a sacred time for God’s people to pause and reflect.
The Christian life is meant to be one of perpetual gratitude, not just seasonal observance. This past year, in triumphs and trials – answered prayers and patient waitings – has been a canvas lovingly painted by the faithful hand of our good Lord. We give thanks not because everything was easy, but because God was in everything.
“give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.” (1 Thess 5:18)
The Apostle Paul reminds us in 1 Thessalonians 5:18 (ESV): “give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.” This is not a suggestion but a divine command, setting the thankful heart as the very will of God for His people. From the early Church Fathers to contemporary writers like R. C. Sproul, thanksgiving is emphasized as a mark of maturity and a defence against anxiety. It acknowledges God’s sovereignty, confirming that even difficulties serve His good purpose in shaping us into Christ’s image. Looking back, we recognize His provision, protection, and persistent love. Even for things we would rather forget, we give thanks, for they have refined our faith as fire refines gold. Ingratitude subtly asserts self-sufficiency, suggesting we deserved more. True thanksgiving humbles us, recognizing that every breath, gift, and circumstance is unmerited grace from our loving Father.
In 2025, God led me deeper into His Word, and for that I am profoundly grateful. As we move into 2026, let us not merely wish for change but commit to pursuing personal spiritual growth, which matters most to God. So, in light of His faithfulness, I resolve to cultivate consistent prayer and fasting, always beginning with thanksgiving, turning requests into opportunities to acknowledge God’s goodness.
How about you? What spiritual discipline/s* is the Lord calling you to pay more attention to in 2026?
May our commitment to a thankful heart and active growth honour the Lord who carried us through 2025. For surely He will carry us through 2026, and beyond! Amen.
* though not exhaustive, other examples of spiritual disciplines include solitude and silence, service, simplicity, stewardship and generosity, confession, worship, journaling.
