Hebrews 11:1
We may be ordinary people, but when we seek God and depend on Him, we can become people of great faith.
Last week I shared about “The Faith of Ordinary People”, today, I would like to share a true story of an ordinary person’s faith.
Recently, my wife and I spent our holidays revisiting the Liu Village Church in northern Thailand. My first visit there was about 26 years ago. It was a mission trip with brothers and sisters from the Mandarin congregation. In partnership with the Liu Village Church, we preached the gospel at four different places. Today, these places have their own churches, and altogether, the Liu Village Church has over 200 members, which is considered a large church in their area.
“Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.” (Hebrews 11:1)
The Liu Village Church was birthed from the simple faith of a sister. Her husband used to be a drug addict (at that time, it was very common for men to do drugs). Her family became dysfunctional as a result. This sister thought to herself, her family would be destroyed if things stayed the same. In her desperation, she recalled hearing the name of Jesus and how Jesus would help people. Right then, she believed that only Jesus could save her family, so she decided to believe in Jesus. Though she did not have any Christian friends to turn to, she knew where to get help from, and decided to act on it the following day. That night, she summoned up her courage and said to her husband: “I’m taking the children with me to Jesus tomorrow. If you want to, you can come with us. If not, leave this family tonight, we do not want you.” Thankfully, he did not leave. Their whole family came to the Lord. That sparked the spread of the gospel in the Liu Village. Today, the sister’s oldest son is a preacher in one of the local churches. In that region now, there is a church in almost every village.
This is the story of an ordinary person’s faith. These people may seem “small and insignificant” in the eyes of men, but God values them. Their faith is not small. They are a great example for us to follow. We may be ordinary people, but when we seek God and depend on Him, we can become people of great faith.
