Mark 12:30
Godliness is the inner foundation, while worship is its outward expression.
“Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.” (Mark 12:30)
This will be my final Pastor’s Heart sharing with you before I retire from Kum Yan Church. I have prayed over this for a long time and felt led to share what matters most in my heart.
As followers of Jesus Christ, godliness and worship lie at the heart of the Christian life. Godliness is the inner foundation, while worship is its outward expression.
“Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.” (Mark 12:30)
Godliness is about living a life that reflects the character of God. It is not merely outward religious behaviour or rule-keeping. Rather, it flows from a sincere reverence for God and a genuine relationship with Him. It is a continual pursuit of holiness and a desire to honour and please Him.
What does it mean to live a godly life?
It means centering our thoughts, attitudes, words, and actions on God. It is shaped by spiritual disciplines and habits: a sincere desire to worship Him, read and meditate on Scripture, draw near to Him in prayer, trust and obey Him, pursue holiness, and seek His will.
It also means allowing God’s Word to guide how we live, the decisions we make, and even the direction and development of church ministry.
Godliness is not about putting on a display for others or simply following religious routines. Rather, it is about following Christ’s example of humility, gentleness, obedience, and self-sacrifice, while growing in a genuine reverence for God and a deeper desire to walk closely with Him.
Worship is the outward expression and living testimony of a godly life. It is not limited to attending Sunday services or singing hymns. True worship flows naturally from a heart devoted to God.
Whether on Sundays or in our daily lives, at work, at home, or in ministry, we are called to live with an attitude of worship. Whatever our role or responsibility, we are to serve faithfully, responsibly, and wholeheartedly, offering our best to God.
Without a life rooted in reverence and godliness, outward acts of worship, such as singing praises, listening to sermons, participating in ministries, or attending church activities, may become little more than routine or outward form.
“Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.” The greatest commandment in Scripture calls us to love the Lord with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength. It calls for complete devotion, with our thoughts, emotions, will, and abilities fully surrendered to God. This goes beyond outward actions or what others may see. It is a wholehearted response to God’s love, marked by trust, gratitude, surrender, and a steadfast commitment to follow Him.
A life of worship grows out of a godly life. We are called to live lives marked by both godliness and worship, not only in church but also in our everyday lives.
1. With All Our Heart
We honour God above all else and love Him wholeheartedly. We prepare our hearts to come before Him with reverence and stillness, making worship a priority and coming ready to meet with the Lord.
2. With All Our Soul
We love the Lord sincerely with our whole being. We praise, thank, and worship Him wholeheartedly, remaining deeply connected to Him.
3. With All Our Mind
We seek to discern God’s will in all things and pursue what pleases Him. With humble and teachable hearts, we listen attentively to His Word, grow deep roots in biblical truth, and continue learning through Sunday School, fellowship, Bible study, and discipleship, always seeking growth and spiritual maturity.
4. With All Our Strength
We serve the Lord wholeheartedly, not carelessly, half-heartedly, or merely going through the motions. We remain willing to learn and grow, continually improving in how we serve. We offer ourselves as living sacrifices, giving our very best to the Lord and bringing glory to His name.
As I prepare to retire, my heartfelt prayer and blessing for every dear brother and sister whom I love is this: may you continue, throughout your life, to pursue godliness and live a life of worship with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength. May you and your family experience God’s abundant blessings in every season of life.
