“losing the watermelon while picking up sesame seeds”

There is a Chinese saying, “捡了芝麻，丢了西瓜” which translates to “losing the watermelon while picking up sesame seeds”. This proverb describes the mistake of focusing on something small and insignificant, only to lose something much greater and more important. The “sesame seeds” stand for minor, fleeting gains, while the “watermelon” symbolises true and lasting blessings. It reminds us that when we chase after small, immediate advantages, we risk losing what really matters.

“What good will it be for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul? Or what can anyone give in exchange for their soul?” (Matt 16:26)

In our walk of faith, we can sometimes fall into this same trap—seeing only short-term benefits and overlooking the greater blessings God has promised us. Jesus said:
“What good will it be for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul? Or what can anyone give in exchange for their soul?” (Matthew 16:26)
The wealth of the entire world is like “sesame seeds”; the salvation of our souls is the true “watermelon”.
Dear brothers and sisters, are we spending our days chasing the “sesame seeds” of this life—properties, cars, status, reputation—while neglecting the “watermelon” God has prepared for us: eternal life? The apostle John reminded us:
“The world and its desires pass away, but whoever does the will of God lives forever.” (1 John 2:17)
Let us not trade the blessings of eternal life for temporary satisfaction. As God’s children, we don’t deny the value of this life, but we must stay watchful so that we don’t lose the greater gift while chasing after the lesser. As we work hard, care for our families, and enjoy God’s blessings, let us keep God and His eternal values at the centre of our lives.
