Five Necessary “Ingredients”

Heart of Discipleship

Dear KY family,
We ended Family Camp 2025 just about 2 weeks ago. It was a wonderful time of hearing the Word, and getting to know each other better. Perhaps after hearing from Ps Benny about the Heart of Discipleship, it would be good to take some time for self-reflection. As he suggested, there are five necessary “ingredients” that we need to have to help us to grow spiritually. I would like to ask us some questions here that would help us reflect on these areas, and chart a path ahead that would help ourselves and our cell group members grow together.

1. Practical teachings
Ps Benny shared that practical teachings are not merely bible study, but must include the practical application of the truths held therein. Are there sources of practical teaching that you glean from regularly? Or are you running dry and finding it difficult to apply what you have learned?
2. Private disciplines
These disciplines include bible study, prayer, worship, fellowship, and evangelism. These 5 disciplines are necessary for every Christian to grow in discipleship. Which of these disciplines do you naturally gravitate towards? What can you do to strengthen yourself in the other disciplines that seem less natural?
3. Personal ministry
Indeed, as Ps Benny shared, a Christian who is not using his/her God-given gifts to glorify God and edify the church will not grow. What are your spiritual and natural giftings? How can you use these gifts to bless the church?
4. Providential relationships
These are God-given relationships that can be side-ways or top-down. The relationship between Paul and Barnabas is one example where because of the relationship, each learns to be more yielded to the Spirit. Who are these kindred spirits in your life? If you would like to have some providential relationships, pray for God to reveal one or two names to you.
5. Pivotal events
These are things that happen to us often beyond our control, and how we respond to what has happened will either cause us to grow or backslide. If we respond in keeping with the Spirit, then we grow and mature. If we respond according to the flesh then we have taken a step backwards in our faith journey. Have there been certain pivotal events in your life recently? How did you respond?
After pondering these questions, how would you say your spiritual growth has been in recent years? Speak to your cell group members, leader or pastor if you’d like some help or kindred spirit come alongside you in this journey. And let us be a church full of disciples of Jesus growing in Christlikeness and impacting the nation and the world with the Gospel!
